Biotechnology Industry Organization Convention Goes Green

BIO’S GREEN INITIATIVESFor the first time ever, the Biotechnology Industry Organization Convention in San Diego is going green. With the help of the many vendors with whom they work, they have put together the following program.

Did you know?

  • Recycling an aluminum can takes 96% less energy than creating a new one.
  • According to the EPA, 75% of Americans’ trash can be recycled, but only 25% actually is.
  • According to the government’s EnergyStar program, if every American home replaced their five most-used light fixtures with EnergyStar rated compact fluorescent the savings would add up to $8 billion annually in energy costs.
  • Did you know a typical 5 day conference for 2,500 attendees will use 90,000 cans or bottles, 75,000 cups and 87,500 napkins? (source: Meeting Strategies Worldwide, 2003).

BIO and Primary Vendors GO GREEN

We are doing our share in minimizing our impact on the environment! We are introducing several earth-friendly programs, with the help of our primary vendors for the 2008 BIO International Convention.

 1. San Diego Convention Center earth-friendly programs at BIO:

  • Recycling Program: recycling bins will be placed throughout the convention center to divert cans, cups, glass products and paper.
  • Food Composting Program: the convention center will divert prep food scraps through their food composting program.
  • Donations Program: the convention center will work with us to ensure excess food is donated to local charities following various events. In addition to the food donations, we will be donating any unused promotional items/materials left over after the convention to local charities.

 2. Projection Audio/Visual Services earth-friendly programs at BIO:

  • Digital Signage: we will be using digital signage throughout the convention center for breakout sessions, company presentations, and other programs which will reduce the volume of signs produced.
  • Equipment: all audio/visual equipment has the EnergyStar label.

 3. BIO, in conjunction with Compusystems Inc., earth-friendly programs:

  • Badges: for the first time, we will be providing attendees with biodegradable badge holders and have recycling bins available to return badges after the show.

 4. Freeman earth-friendly initiatives at BIO:

  • Graphics Production: Freeman is working with their vendors to develop eco-solvent ink products for signs and other graphics.
  • Exhibition Hall Carpet: Freeman recycles 100% of carpets used in the exhibit hall through a very successful innovative industry program that recycles the used carpet into drainage pipe for septic systems, as well as for the manufacture of pet-related products, which dramatically reduces land-fill waste.
  • Exhibitor Service Kits: with Freeman OnLine®, their online exhibitor service kit, they are actively working to significantly reduce the amount of paper and plastic products that is used to produce the exhibitor service kits.

 5. Hotel Earth-friendly Initiatives:

  • Hotel Linen & Towel Re-use Program
  • Water Conservation
  • Recycling
