Kaiser Permanente achieves 99% waste diversion from landfill!

When Plan It Green got the call to assist San Diego’s Kaiser Permanente on their August premiere of a “Farm Fresh Food Fair”, we immediately jumped into action! Our plan of action was to ask the right questions directed towards catering, décor and event waste solutions. Our mission was to celebrate the grand opening of Kaiser’s newest clinic in Rancho Bernardo. They requested we combine great healthy food and an educational perspective on healthy living and lifestyle. The guests included many patients of the new clinic as well as medical, administrative staff and the local public.

The concept of the event was inspired by San Diego’s diverse farmer’s markets. However, we had to take it to the next level with a fresh new twist with gourmet, organic, locally sourced foods, vivid decor and the integrated healthy living education from a variety of Kaiser’s partners.

Our most vital element was the zero waste planning that made this event so successful. Here’s what our client had to say about the event and the experience working with Plan It Green…

Scott,

You are amazing! Thanks to you, we really produced one ‘green’ event. At the beginning of the planning phase we (more like you!) had identified some ambitious goals and I was so impressed to see that with your expertise and guidance, we were able to surpass those expectations. At the conclusion of Kaiser Permanente’s Farm Fresh Food Fair on August 7th, with approximately 350 – 400 guests, an astounding 99% of the event’s waste was diverted from the landfill! With the diligent assistance of Zero Waste San Diego and Plan It Green, the waste consisted of 96% compostable waste, 3% recycled waste and ONLY 1% landfill waste.

This zero waste event solution was so successful because you took the time to go over every little item with all the vendors. Your efforts to work with each of them and fine tune their stations, made all the difference. By the time you were done, everyone was onboard. I especially like the new disposable products that you suggested to serve food and beverage items. The exclusive use of items made from either corn or sugarcane, which included all of the cutlery, plates and cups, is the primary reason this was such a success. Thanks to your industry knowledge and expertise, everything was compostable or biodegradable.

Thank you Plan It Green for cleaning up our special event! It’s was an exciting and rewarding experience.

Be well and Thrive,
Janette Lampe
